जब घना अंधेरा छाया हो, 

जब घुटता मन अकुलाया हो। 

जब व्यथा हृदय छलनी कर दे, 

जब जीना सब दूभर कर दें।। 

जब ज्ञान की बातें व्यर्थ लगें, 

जब मन की वाणी अर्थ लगे। 

जब जीवन मरण समान लगे, 

जब स्वप्न सभी निष्प्राण लगें।। 

तब अंतर्मन की शांति को प्रभु को ही बुलाना पड़ता है;

राजा हो चाहे रंक कोई तब ध्यान लगाना पड़ता है। 

जब खोटी हर अच्छाई लगे, 

जब मिथ्या हर सच्चाई लगे। 

जब कोकिल भी हमे काग लगे, 

जब हिम भी हमको आग लगे।। 

जब आशाएँ सब टूटी हों, 

जब सांत्वनाएं भी झूठी हों। 

जब अपने अपने साथ न हों, 

जब निजमन पर विश्वास न हो।। 

तब अंतर्मन की शांति को प्रभु को ही बुलाना पड़ता है;

राजा हो चाहे रंक कोई तब ध्यान लगाना पड़ता है।
